It can be an absolute minefield out there when it comes to choosing the best skin care products and routine for your skin type. It would be relatively simple if you just had to choose between oily and dry. And if you had neither then you would have normal skin – right? But Mother Nature throws in a few curved balls for good measure.
Most of us have a combination of different skin types. A little oily around the nose, chin and forehead? And dry on your cheeks and around your eyes? Then you probably have combination skin. Then how do you know if you only have dry or oily skin? And even worse, how do you deal with sensitive skin?
Take our
skin care quiz to find out your skin type once and for all. And if you are still not quite sure you can always do the blotting paper test.
The Blotting Paper Test to Check your Skin Type
- Remove all makeup and wash your face well.
- Let your skin return to its natural state for at least 2-3 hours.
- Now take a piece of blotting paper and gently press over various parts of your face.
- The blotting paper will pick up oily patches and remain unblemished on normal or dry skin.
- If you see any flaky areas, you have dry skin.
- You could have an oily T-zone with dry cheeks - then you have combination skin.
Now that you know your skin type, you are faced with a bunch of skin care products to choose from. What ingredients should you look out for that will work best with your skin type? And which ones should you avoid in your skincare routine?
Here are all the dos and don’ts for each skin type, plus the best skin care products in South Africa for each - whether you have oily, normal, combination, acne-prone, dry or sensitive skin…
